Abstract

The field of interior design is rapidly evolving due to technological advancements, with artificial intelligence emerging as one of the most prominent tools to support the educational process and enhance students' skills, especially in the early stages of their projects. This research aims to explore the impact of using artificial intelligence techniques in helping interior design students develop accurate preliminary concepts for their projects, through comprehensive analysis of geographical and demographic data, aligned with the cultural and environmental identity of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The research also focuses on how these technologies can be employed to improve the quality of interior designs that reflect local culture.

The research was conducted on a sample of 14 students in a hotel design studio, where they were trained to use AI tools such as ChatGPT to collect and analyze data related to tourist and heritage sites, understand the target segments of local residents and visitors, and assess the tourism development potential in these areas. These tools contributed to accelerating the development of design concepts and increasing students' awareness of the importance of linking design to local context and national identity. The results showed that artificial intelligence helped students improve the quality of design outputs, enhancing the accuracy of preliminary concepts and the realism of their designs.

The research results indicated that artificial intelligence did not negatively impact the students' creativity or intellectual independence but rather helped develop their critical and analytical thinking skills. The study also demonstrated that artificial intelligence is an effective educational tool that supports modern educational strategies in universities, aligning with the goals of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, particularly in the areas of education development, tourism enhancement, and heritage preservation. Ultimately, the research recommends integrating AI techniques as a fundamental part of the curriculum in interior design programs, emphasizing the need to balance the benefits of technology with the human aspect of the creative process, which will contribute to producing a generation of designers capable of addressing future challenges.
