Abstract

The encaustic painting is considered one of the historical arts, which has strong roots in the history of ancient Egyptian and Coptic arts. This type is dated back to the beginnings of the 9th century when the Greek artists occupied in Al Fayoum. At that time, they used the encaustic to draw and paint the mummies' faces as a ritual during burial. The encaustic uses the materials in various ways to be fused with others to achieve a perfect texture. These exquisite characteristics pushed contemporary artists to use it in realistic and abstract works. What is special indeed about encaustic is that it spurs an instant aura of experimentation, innovation, and amusement without any previous preparations or outlines. Nowadays, encaustic art uses some new materials like acrylic, and it broadens its limited uses by finding new ideas to be employed with. This research tackles the history of encaustic art in both ancient and modern times through exhibiting some encaustic artistic works. Further, the research tackles how the contemporary artist was able to employ encaustic in painting, though it has advanced techniques based on using fire and hit. Not only the contemporary artists were able to experiment with such types of painting, but also they used technology to eliminate all obstacles and to save time. The research includes a minute analysis of the steps and application by citing 16 different, encaustic, works in size and style. There were various ways to experiment with the encaustic art in painting using embossed, carved, transparent, and dark modes. The whole experiment was based on two pillars. The first pillar was the scenery in Qaroon Oasis in Al Fayoum, in addition to the variety of plants there. The second pillar was to naturally and totally make the materials instead of using wax or different paints to produce colors.
