Issues of identity and heritage in Palestinian cinema

Abstract

Cinema is a reflection of the society, and one of the important tributaries to highlight identity and a record of preserving and documenting the heritage of nations. Especially when they are the owners of a just cause. But how can it survive under a fraught struggle and a permanent conflict over the identity of the land. How can Palestinian filmmakers express their heritage, beliefs and traditions in light of siege, oppression, violence and displacement. The first generation of Palestinian filmmakers expressed their cause through a cinematic presentation that is closer to mixing the documentary and narrative style. And they formed a resistance movement to raise the Palestinian issue in international cinema, similar to the Palestinian resistance movements. So they succeeded in reaching their Palestinian cause to the whole world through the language of cinema. Their journeys have been completed by the generation of expatriate filmmakers who have emerged since the early 1980s. Their movement generated a cinematic revolution, a popular movement and struggle. This movement became known as the new wave of Palestinian cinema.
The directors of the Palestinian new wave have sought to change the West’s view of the image of the Palestinian who resists the occupier and blows himself up to take revenge on his enemy. They have changed this image into the image of the Palestinian who cherishes his land, clinging to life and death on it. So he resists in order to preserve his identity and daily rituals, regardless of the bitter situation that he lives. with clear insistence and totally ignoring the provocation of the occupier. They sincerely expressed their adherence to their identity and heritage. Then, their resonance reached international forums and international film festivals.
The dialectic of identity and alienation remains, and how it is dealt with in Palestinian cinema, and the question of identity remained for the Palestinian director with identity. The triangle of the components of the Palestinian national identity is still missing one of its sides: culture, the independent, stable and sovereign state, and the struggle with the external or internal enemy. Culture and the struggle for survival are in dire need of an independent, stable and sovereign state.
