Employing Written Inscriptions in Recent Mosques Architecture in Egypt

Abstract

What we are building today soon becomes an influential heritage in the next generations, as they will take their experiences from it, so we have to stop and see what we are building and whether it is linked to our identity and our steps to future. The research tried to discover that in one of the mosque features, which are the written inscriptions, the inscriptions are considered original elements associated with the mosque architecture. Throughout the ages Muslims have mastered the use of Arabic inscriptions in the mosque, and mixing the art of writing with the art of architecture was part of the architectural character in ancient mosques; Therefore, the research aims to identify the characteristics of architectural employment of written inscriptions in recent mosques in Egypt, the descriptive-analytical methodology was used, The descriptive-analytical methodology was used in the two parts of the study: the theoretical framework and the field study, the theoretical framework contains a historical overview of the use of writing in ancient mosques in Egypt, identifying the design vocabulary related to the architectural employment of the inscriptions and discussing those vocabularies , then classifying them in preparation for the field study. the field study including a sample of ten recent big mosques from different cities in Egypt. The field study contains four steps: identifying the design vocabulary under study and how it is studied, identifying study samples, viewing descriptive data about mosques, and collecting and analyzing data. The research concluded that there is a strong correlation of inscriptions in recent mosques to traditional forms, and their use in relatively large surfaces, especially in the interior walls and domes of the interior and mihrab. the use of inscriptions in recently mosques are functionally more than decorative. it also became clear that there is a need for renewal in terms of the geometric form of writing or the use of advanced materials that allow the possibilities of the work of new compositions.
