Expressive Spontaneity in the Textiles of Al-Haraneyah Village

Abstract:
In view of the importance as well as originality of the art of textile, and considering it one of the oldest fields of plastic art that are passed down to generations, and which rely on special aesthetics and inherited techniques since the inception of the ancient Egyptian civilization until now, and based on the features of a pioneering textile experience in the framework of the development and fostering of plastic arts, which is the experience of the artist Ramses Wissa Wassef, in which he chose to exclude the influences of the mechanical and material modernity and their societal constraints in the twentieth century, thus he used the Egyptian countryside as a natural environment for his experience, and its inhabitants as tools for its implementation. He chose the village of Al-Haraneyah where he established a center for textile arts, and implemented his experience, which was based on the idea of spontaneity in art.
This experience was based on three main bases as follows:
1- Ordinary people who are distinguished by their innate nature.
2- A natural environment far from urbanization.
3- A simple manual textile device.
This contemporary experience resulted in a group of textile artworks that combine the skill and mastery of formulation with preservation of originality and identity in its global reach, in spite of the keenness of the artists to keep the spontaneity of expression that still exists until now.
In the village of Al-Haraneyah, weavers of the of all ages share the act of drawing inspiration of the themes of their work from nature and from their existence in the Egyptian environment, that is why they have their own genuine style that forgery or indoctrination have no effect on.
The artist Ramses Wissa Wassef was keen to unleash the creativity of his weavers, freeing them from restrictions and letting them free to choose the themes and their colors. As a result, their works appeared expressive of the environment in a very unique sincerity, simplicity and spontaneity of expression.
When spontaneity is linked to art we see it embodied in unique and distinct ideas , whatever the materialistic medium that the artist’s environment provides; because in the end it is a creative work.

The current study was conducted with the purpose of identifying the features and characteristics that show and confirm the expressive spontaneity in the textiles of Al-Haraneyah village.
