Modern Techniques to Prove Ownership of Digital Artworks

Abstract

The great development in Information and Communication Technologies ICT was accompanied by a huge spread of digital content, especially creative in nature; in the form of written text, still or animated images or audio/video content. The Internet, which is now available anytime anywhere to everyone, has contributed to this great spread of digital creative content across the globe. With this unprecedented access to digital content, problems have emerged. Of these problems, the violation of the creator's intellectual property rights, whether by copying or using the creative content without reference to its creator. The biggest problem, however, is that the creator cannot first: protect their artistic production from such violations, and second: prove their ownership of the creative content if such violations occur.

This research discusses modern techniques that enable artists, especially painters, to prove ownership of their digital artworks. First: by exploring some of the most important methods of protecting artworks from violation on the Internet. Second: by going through some of the most important modern technologies used today as solutions to help artists prove their ownership of their digital artworks. Results of the study include, first: protecting digital artists from online abuse, whether by violators directly copying the artwork as a whole or parts of it. Second: through techniques that enable them to track and identify their creative production, digital artists gain the ability to proof their ownership, thereby preserving their creative rights. Third: by preserving the artist's creative rights, nations could preserve their digital artistic heritage from being lost.
