Abstract

Sustainability represents a culture and human behavior that ensures protection and continuity. As it relates to sustainable development, cultural sustainability is linked to the preservation of cultural practices and heritage. Documentary photography is a means of documenting heritage by embodying its symbolic, aesthetic and cultural dimensions, and represents through images human practices in their various cultural manifestations. The Jazani heritage that was formulated by the ancestors and which derived all its ancient details from society and was mixed with the lifestyle of its children, forming a living symbol of a cultural era which was passed on through the generations, is a distinctive cultural heritage that must be sustained and it could possibly be utilized to create designs for printed tourist souvenirs that reflect that history and culture in a way that would be enjoyed by tourists. Hence, the research problem can be summarized in the following question: How can the Jazani heritage be sustained through documentary photography to create designs for printed tourist souvenirs? This research aims to study the role of sustainability in preserving heritage through documentary photography of Jazani heritage. It also aims to study the aesthetic values of the heritage elements in Jazan and to benefit from them in creating designs for original printed tourist souvenirs. The importance of the research lies in shedding light on documentary photography and its role in the sustainability of the Jazani heritage and studying its aesthetic and plastic values, applying the (descriptive-analytical) approach to documentary photographs of elements of Jazani heritage and using the (applied- artistic) approach to create innovative designs for printed tourist souvenirs bearing the Jazani character and printed on fabrics and on tourist cards. The two researchers have thus proven that documentary photography has an effective role in sustaining, preserving, and reviving heritage by creating contemporary formative solutions for printed tourist souvenir designs that embody the Jazani heritage and reflect its culture.
