Abstract

In light of modern education strategies, universities and institutions are focused on interdisciplinary collaborations as an experimental approach in teaching and research-based learning. A systematic review analysis was conducted to identify the challenges facing students and educators in the interdisciplinary educational process. The challenges identified were concerned with the coordination between different departments and developing the students’ perception with regard to the interdisciplinary approach. On that account, the research gap lies within the lack of integrating diverse academic curricula between art disciplines, which is regarded to be a limiting and challenging factor in facilitating the students’ creative design skills. Accordingly the Faculty of fine arts in Alexandria, Egypt contributed greatly to the development of teaching methods and concepts through constructing an interdisciplinary "environmental graphic design" course that incorporated the disciplines of architecture, interior and graphic design to achieve an integrated design vision. The research aimed to apply an integrated, Interdisciplinary teaching method that enhanced the student participation through research groups and developed the students’ vision , perspectives , critical and analytical thinking in a creative interdisciplinary environment. In order to address the aforementioned gap, the researchers conducted an experimental interdisciplinary project for the third year students in the Architecture department. The process was designed to include twenty students, divided into five groups to design an environmental graphic project through an interdisciplinary elective studio. Followed by data gathering and analysis, the findings has revealed statistically significant differences in the learning outcome within the different disciplines. Finally, the paper discussed the interdisciplinary architecture studio's visions and potential strategies to achieve the best experience for educators and students in the light of the theoretical framework and previous studies.
