Abstract

Egyptomania has influenced many domains of Western culture. Since most of the ancient Egyptian heritage falls within the architectural heritage, Egyptomania has inspired the global architectural expression. The research study the impact of Egyptomania on modern architectural history at the international and local levels. The research questions are: (a) What is the relationship between Egyptomania and the modern architectural history? (b) What is the philosophy of applying the Egyptian style? (c) What is the expressive treatment of the Egyptian revival? The research aims to monitor and document the Egyptian revival in modern architectural history. The time limitations for the research were set from the beginning of the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century, which is the period of modern history. This period coinciding with the peak of Egyptomania in Western history. The research falls within the mixed research. The study depends on the quantitative survey method by studying all the remaining and documented cases that were affected by the Egyptian revival. the number of cases reached 51 international cases, and 9 local cases during the time limitations. The research follows the documentary method through the qualitative critical method to analyze the philosophy of architectural treatment and discuss the results. The important results were: (1) The philosophy of Egyptian revival in modern architectural was linked to symbolic and morphological purposes (2) The Egyptian revival depends on the revival style and the historical style with its two forms, complex and simple (3) The Egyptian revival was an attempt to rescue the Neo-classicism that was in the moribund phase.
