"Movie Posters in the Twentieth Century" (An Analytical Study of Design Methods and Visual Impact Factors for the Movie Poster in Egypt)

Abstract

The movie poster is one of the most important types of advertising posters, which constitute a special art in its own based on creativity in design and visual and emotional impact on the audience. What enhances the emotional impact of the movie poster is the visual impact of the design vocabulary inside the poster, which forms its design context that expresses the content of the shown film and gives an impression of the events it contains. Given the importance of the movie poster as one of the arts of mass communication and one of the most important types of advertising posters, and due to its great spread in the twentieth century, being one of the most important means of advertising in general and cinematographic movies in particular, the topic of the current research was chosen by the researcher, which is the study of the most important methods of designing the movie poster in the twentieth century in Egypt and the factors of its visual impact on the audience, which work to arouse the interest of the audience and motivating them towards watching the film. The research problem has been presented through a set of questions posed, which are answered through the research steps. The research aims to identify the design methods that characterize the Egyptian movie poster in the twentieth century and the most important art schools that affected the movie poster, the most important of which are the realistic school, the symbolic school, and the expressive school, as well as identifying the design factors that lead to achieving the desired visual effect of the movie poster. The research follows the descriptive analytical method by describing and analyzing a set of models for movie posters in Egypt in the period from the early twentieth century until the end of the seventies of the century, benefiting from studies and theories related to the subject of the research. A set of results have been reached that answer the research questions and verify its hypotheses, as well as the most important recommendations were presented by the researcher.
