The Legacy of Islamic Identity in Contemporary Jewelry Design

Abstract

Islamic art has significantly impacted contemporary artistic production; due to its rich aesthetic and cognitive yield that contributed to the development of contemporary design with all its forms and techniques. Islamic legacy has a unique individual identity that has its own influence on various modern arts and literature, thus; Islamic art – with all its aesthetic elements and units- has hugely contributed to contemporary design in general, in regards to the affirmation of design uniqueness and identity; which appears in the design through many indications; including written language (fonts & writings), drawings, chartings, colors used in the design and religious and environmental beliefs.



The problem of this research is how to benefit from the aesthetic values of Islamic art in creating formulations and processing for jewelry, which keep pace with the modern era and match its particulars.



The research aims to obtain new design approaches through the formation principles and architectural and decorative systems of Islamic art; in order to enrich the field of contemporary jewelry, establish the Islamic identity in modern jewelry design, and reveal the creative and aesthetic notions of the form elements of Islamic motifs; as a design approach for contemporary jewelry, while maintaining; at the same time; its originality, as well as its intellectual and aesthetic indicators.



The significance of the research is to highlight the artistic values that characterized Islamic decorative elements and their ability to extract new and creative formations in light of the inputs of Islamic heritage, as well as to demonstrate the role of Islamic art and its influence on contemporary jewelry design; through Arabic calligraphy or, formation structures; to obtain a cultural integration and an intellectual linkage between the past and the future.

The research proposes the possibility to innovate creative artistic formations for contemporary jewelry based on the formation principles and constructional systems of Islamic decorations.

The research follows the analytical and experimental methods through an analytical study of examples of jewelry, that are designed according to the aesthetic values of Islamic art and utilizing these values in creating designs for jewelry that hold the Islamic identity with a contemporary essence and vision.
