Abstract

Open spaces are an essential component of the urban fabric of any city, they act as a natural outlet among the building blocks in addition to the practice of many necessary and recreational activities within them, However, open spaces are facing many challenges, such as the huge increase in population and the pressure on energy consumption, in addition to economic and environmental challenges. This led to the emergence of many problems, such as the deterioration of its condition, and thus not achieving the desired goals. And with the tremendous development in information and communication technology, many modern concepts emerged in the field of designing and managing cities, such as the concept of "smart cities" which are cities that rely on modern technologies of information and communication technology in their infrastructure in order to meet all the challenges facing cities in the twenty-first century. The research is concerned with studying the concepts of open spaces and smart cities and how to benefit from the smart solutions and applications that they provide in the field of designing open spaces with the aim of developing them, and raising their efficiency.

The study is based on 3 main axes, starting with studying the interrelationship between open spaces, their types and components, smart cities and their applications, and modern technology associated with them such as the Internet of Things (IOT) and artificial intelligence AI, and then studying the impact of these modern factors on open spaces in smart cities, and then the analytical study. Two case studies of smart cities are being analyzed : Seoul in South Korea, and the New Administrative Capital City in Egypt, through studying how smart technology affected the design of open spaces in each of them, to reach the last axis of the study : extraction of conclusions and presenting proposals for the development of open spaces, to reach its highest levels of efficiency and achieve environmental, social and economic sustainability, and to provide a set of general recommendations for designing smart, sustainable and highly efficient open spaces
