Abstract

At the present time, there has become an urgent need to use small spaces in order to keep pace with the global economic conditions, which make our approach towards minimal a necessity.

Small spaces require a special design that achieves a balance between movement in narrow spaces and the size of furniture, so how do we achieve the equation? Therefore, we think about applying the concept of negative space to determine the ratio of the of the space contents of furniture to the available movement pathways in order to achieve a sense of visual and psychological balance for the user inside the space. The negative space has many applications, hidden furniture in its various forms is the most important application. So, the aim is to change the traditional space design into a hidden design that fits with the small space, this new vision is a practical application of the principles of the minimalism, which is now a global trend in design. The research focuses on the design of invisible furniture as a different idea that aims to change the design of small space from a traditional design to an invisible design as one of the applications of the concept of negative space, which achieves the following:

Balance between furniture and movement corridors.

Reducing the visible space elements that do not fit into the small space into one element that includes all the other invisible elements.

Simplifying the final form of space as a basic principle of reductive design that makes the most of small spaces.
