The Functionality of furniture to achieve flexibility in residential apartments in Jeddah

Abstract

Furniture is one of the basic elements in the space, and it has evolved and was reflected in the impact of technical development, so it differed in its concept from what it was, and economic and social changes led to a change in people’s lifestyle, but the current housing may not fulfill all the needs of families in addition to the limited space and lack of a functionally appropriate furnishing style. Aesthetically, with the limited spaces, the fixed traditional pieces of furniture may not perform their function efficiently when the space becomes sophisticated and dynamic, thus creating the need to employ advanced furniture that moves and changes with the space. Hence, the research questions centered on: What is the extent of the Saudi society’s knowledge of the concept of flexibility and how to apply it in their current home, and what is the extent of their knowledge of the concept of smart technology in furniture and their acceptance of its use to increase the flexibility in the residential apartments?

The study aimed to identify the concept of flexible movable furniture and its role in increasing the flexibility of spaces and the extent to which users accept its use to achieve flexibility. The knowledge of the Saudi community about the concept of flexibility through the possibility of merging or reusing spaces, and it was applied by employing multi-use furniture. Sufficient companies to supply and apply technology in furniture, which will contribute to the realization of "Vision 2030" by adopting the latest technologies in the residential sector in addition to raising the quality of life by taking advantage of the space of residential spaces. In light of this, the researcher recommended providing movable furniture at reasonable prices in the Saudi market in addition to the importance of adopting and applying this concept by those interested in the housing sector.
