Abstract

This research paper endeavours to discuss the concept of multifunctional murals as an integrated part of the architectural context. Adding a functional aspect to the mural design; this paper suggests that these functional murals could transform the whole space (particularly public spaces) into a more amusing experience to the visitors.

The Paper also addresses the impact of the internal architectural space on the activities and performance of individuals' so-called "social space". Studying the architectural elements of the facility such as windows, openings and corridors and embedding these architectural features within the mural is an essential aspect of the design process, which subsequently integrates the mural to the architectural context and boosts the notion of social space.

The literature review in this research exposes the function of murals across time and the impact of mural arts in shaping the consciousness of individuals as a means of communicating with society. Moreover, analysis of similar mural design approaches (analytical Study) was crucial to identify the advantages and disadvantages of these endeavours in an attempt to investigate to which extent these samples integrated with architectural settings they have been designed for.

The outcomes of these analyses formed a substantial reference that could be useful in creating functional murals, which contributes to the development of the spatial design. The research suggests that the presence of a tangible functional mural could significantly foster the functionality aspects of the architectural space.

The authors also suggest that choosing the right surface and the right place in the architectural space is one of the most important aspects to be considered in designing a mural that is both functional and decorative. A good choice of a wall site would better flow the movement and thus make the most use of the space and achieve the desired function.

The paper is practice-led research which reciprocates between theory and practice, the outcomes of the literature review and the analytical study in this research had a significant impact on all design practices produced and discussed in the final part of this paper.
