The Artistic Values of Saudi Heritage Ornaments: An Approach to Beautify Openings in Contemporary Buildings Using Mechanical Engraving Techniques - A Case Study of Taif University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is witnessing an urban renaissance period coping with modern architectural trends which depends on glass generally in architectural facades and modern application of interior design.

The industry of Glass is also in an increasing progress where exports of glass formed about 20% of KSA exports in 2004, equivalent to 60 million USD according to statistics of KSA Integrated Program.

Modern Laser drilling technique has evolved in using ceramics ink to print on glass giving many opportunities for long-lasting designs & visual effects where large format images can be printed on glass with high resolution, converting modern buildings facades into transparent artworks.

Among the aesthetical heritage & technical contemporary approach of the research problem which represents the need to compromise between authenticity & contemporary in emphasizing the identity & architectural character and application in daily life aspects, was the aim of research to benefit from the KSA developing glass industry besides Laser drilling techniques in creating designs for Al Taif University buildings with aesthetic values along with informative values of Way Finding signage & directional systems internal & external.

The research also shows some Saudi traditional motifs and potentials of its benefit in designing facades carrying the spirit of heritage in a contemporary context.

The research recommends broadening the range of using printing on glass in Way Finding signage & directional systems in residential & touristic compounds with contemporary architectural style.
