Abstract

Egypt's vision 2030 and future trends seek to establish patterns of sustainable urbanization through the development of the environmental impact assessment mechanism for urban spaces. The design of squares and public squares faces many challenges to achieve sustainable development. The research reviewed the most important indicators that were mentioned in Egypt Vision 2030 for the sustainability of urban patterns, especially the squares and indicators that were mentioned in the competition for designing the squares of the governorates of Egypt in 2022 and according to the criteria of the Egyptian Governorate Square Design Competition 2022.

The research aims at measuring the inclusiveness extent of squares and public squares of the sustainability principles through a proposed reference framework for the sustainability criteria of the squares and public squares, the analysis of local models of squares and public squares, and a measurement of the extent of applying the sustainability principles to figure out strengths and weaknesses to benefit from them. The research consists of three parts as it follows: the first part starts with a study of the criterion determinants for designing squares and public squares and the standards of the National Organization for Urban Harmony for the competition of designing squares, elements of road furniture and open spaces in the main cities in the governorates of the Arab Republic of Egypt 2022. Then, it is followed by the second part, which includes an analytical study of the sustainability trends of squares to reach a frame of reference for the sustainability criteria of public squares as one of the sustainable development approaches. The research ends with an applied analytical study of models of squares and public squares (a comparative analysis: Ramses Square in Cairo – Al Shaab Square in the New Administrative Capital) according to the elements of the proposed reference framework and two models were selected from the public fields and squares, so that each of them is considered a major component for shaping the urban fabric of the city.
