Impact of the Eco-cohabitate Concept on the Design of Interiors and Hand Tuft Carpets (Case study on Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Center in Harrania)

Abstract

The concept of Eco-cohabitate goes beyond eco-friendly and environmental preservation, as it is the optimum level of integration with nature. In light of the tendency to confirm the concept of connecting with the environment, environmental stimuli have an important role in developing human creativity and achieving integration between humans and the natural. Nature is an environmental and cultural system at the same time, which affects the artist's inspiration and reflects its influences in the artwork. Therefore, achieving Eco-cohabitate between the artist and the surrounding environment releases the innate artistic instinct and enhances the creative process. The research problem is represented in ignoring the impact of the Eco- cohabitate concept and the lack of measurable standards to achieve it for enhancing the artist's connection with the surrounding environment and developing innate creativity in the places of art practice, especially art and handicraft centers. Therefore, the research aims to conduct a case study on the Ramses Wissa Wassef Arts Center in Harrania to put criteria to the Eco- cohabitate design concept which is (Contact with nature - sustainability - rooting identity - caring for the human element). The research presents an analytic study on the effect of Eco- cohabitate design on architecture, interior designs, and handmade carpets. Moreover, the research presents a proposal for designing the interior spaces of weavers’ workshops, design proposals inspired by the center’s handmade carpet works, and implementation of one of them through the use of a different weaving method, Hand Tuft, which is characterized by accuracy, speed in production, and takes into account the concept of Eco- cohabitate concept. The research also deals with conducting a questionnaire study to measure the impact of achieving Eco-cohabitate criteria on the design of interior spaces as well as designing and producing carpets in a different method, which is Hand Tuft. The research emphasizes the role of the designer in achieving Eco-cohabitating to connect the artists with the environment and its positive impact on the development of handicraft centers
