Abstract

Metaphysics or beyond nature, is a branch of philosophy concerned with studying existence and its nature. It goes beyond physical visible phenomena to search into absolute principles and truths. This philosophical depth allows designers to inspire ideas that enrich contemporary interior design which contributes to have designs that integrate spiritual and symbolic dimensions by implementing metaphysical concepts. The interior designer could therefore innovate by using designing tools that portray philosophical concepts such as time, existence, and identity. The metaphysics of interior design is the study of the philosophical essence beyond designing interior spaces and how it affects perceptions, emotions, and human experiences. It goes beyond practical and aesthetic considerations to explore existential and spiritual foundations that give a space meaning and impact.

This research will explore how metaphysics can serve as an intellectual stimulus that contributes to shaping elements of contemporary interior design. This can be achieved by analyzing examples and practical applications that embody this approach, aiming to achieve a deeper understanding of how philosophical concepts can be integrated into modern design practices. The research emphasizes the central role of metaphysics as an intellectual motivator in shaping design thought and output, as well as in shaping the phenomena and styles of interior design that materialistic studies alone cannot analyze, uncover, or interpret. Materialistic interpretations reduce phenomena to a single material dimension that describes and explains functional relationships and structural proportions without delving into the philosophies and motivations behind the designer’s work. Therefore, it is essential to analyze these phenomena through a comprehensive exploration of the heritage and philosophical symbolism accompanying design thought, as well as the variables imposed by scientific advancements and technological progress, which have reshaped and redefined the metaphysical structure.
