Abstract

Cultural heritage is a fundamental part of the identity of nations and peoples, and this is clearly embodied in traditional arts such as Japanese Kumiko woodworking and Islamic art, which is considered one of the most exquisite and richest arts that have influenced various design fields. Amid rapid technological advancements, contemporary designs now require the integration of these traditional arts to meet the needs of the modern era. However, designers face challenges in reviving these arts in a way that aligns with the requirements of contemporary interior and furniture design, necessitating the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) to find innovative solutions.

This study will focus on a comparison between Kumiko art and Islamic decorative patterns, and how to revitalize these arts using AI in modern designs.

Research Problem:

Amid rapid technological advancements and the emergence of AI as a design tool, designers face significant challenges in integrating traditional arts, such as Kumiko and Islamic ornamentation, with the needs of contemporary interior design. The primary challenge lies in striking a balance between preserving the authenticity of these arts and ensuring their compatibility with modern market demands.

Research Objective:

To explore the similarities and differences between Kumiko art and Islamic ornamentation, and to revitalize heritage by analyzing how these arts can be integrated into interior and furniture design using AI, providing a new vision for innovative interior and furniture designs.

Research Hypotheses:

There are similarities in the use of geometric patterns and repetition between Japanese Kumiko art and Islamic ornamentation, while the differences lie in sources of inspiration, techniques, and the level of geometric complexity.

Generative AI can be an effective tool for innovatively integrating elements of Kumiko and Islamic ornamentation into contemporary interior and furniture designs.

The use of AI contributes to the revival of cultural heritage by analyzing and generating patterns inspired by traditional arts, ensuring their continuity and evolution.

Research Methodology:

The study follows an inductive approach in gathering information and data, then employs a descriptive-analytical method and a comparative approach between Kumiko art and Islamic ornamentation.
