Abstract

Mosaic is one of the ancient arts invented by humans, intricately linked to architectural decoration, beginning with the Byzantine and Roman civilizations, passing through the Islamic era, the Middle Ages, and finally culminating in contemporary mosaics. This art has undergone significant development in both the materials and techniques used, evolving into a rich means of expression that covers numerous works of imagery or applied decoration for functional or aesthetic purposes in both exterior and interior architecture. Mastering arrangement techniques is essential for controlling visual rhythm and the logic of form, as the way pieces are arranged influences how the viewer perceives the artwork. Whether it evokes movement or stability, radiance, and centrality, or promotes harmony and equilibrium, or even adds a touch of intentional randomness that imparts a dynamic and unconventional character to the design.

Considering the variety and diversity in arrangement methods and styles, it is crucial for the designer to possess a deep understanding of these techniques to choose the most suitable style to execute their designs, according to the targeted aesthetic and functional vision. Understanding the differences between random and regular arrangements, graduated and radiant, grid and meandering, not only enriches the designer's experience but also opens new avenues for creativity, allowing them to exploit the possibilities of mosaics in innovative ways that go beyond traditional solutions to express their ideas.

Study problem

Despite the numerous studies on the development of mosaics and their artistic trends, the methods of their arrangement have not received sufficient attention, despite their importance in the visual and aesthetic impact of the design.

Objective

Highlighting the different mosaic arrangement methods and analyzing their visual and functional impact in expressing design, by examining some existing models, in order to provide an analytical perspective that helps designers consciously and creatively utilize these techniques.

Study approach

The research follows a descriptive-analytical approach to existing artworks created using mosaic techniques with different arrangement styles.
