Abstract

The director of photography plays a crucial role that begins with the preparation for the film, regardless of its type, whether narrative or documentary. The director of photography is primarily responsible for the visual aspect of the film, including lighting, colors, camera selection, and appropriate tools for cinematic work. Documentaries, in particular, require special attention to visuals; the director of photography narrates the film's story through various visual elements. Both natural and artificial light sources are utilized by the director of photography using different techniques that align with the documentary's objectives. With the technological advancements in cameras, varying sizes, and quality, the preparation and shooting methods adapt to meet the artistic needs. The evolution of cameras has made it easier for the director of photography to manipulate natural light more effectively, undoubtedly impacting the overall appearance of the film.



The role of the director of photography in documentaries is vital for creating a realistic and impactful atmosphere. This role is especially evident in the use of natural lighting, which serves as a fundamental artistic element that contributes to story development and directs the viewer's attention. The director of photography faces numerous challenges due to the continuous changes in natural lighting, yet their experience and creativity allow them to turn these challenges into opportunities for producing unique and distinctive visual works.
